The Image Format Landscape in 2026
The way we serve images on the web has changed dramatically in the past five years. New formats promise smaller files and better quality, but browser compatibility and tooling support remain important considerations.
JPEG: Still Relevant?
JPEG has been the dominant format for photographs since the 1990s. Despite its age, it remains widely compatible and performs well at quality settings of 75–85 with modern encoders like MozJPEG.
Use JPEG when: targeting maximum compatibility, or when your images don't need transparency.
PNG: Lossless and Transparent
PNG is the go-to for graphics, logos, and screenshots where lossless quality and transparency are required. However, PNG files are often much larger than equivalent JPEGs.
WebP: The Modern Standard
WebP offers both lossy and lossless compression, transparency support, and animation — at file sizes typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG/PNG equivalents. It enjoys near-universal browser support as of 2024.
Recommendation: Use WebP as your primary format for the modern web.
AVIF: The Next Generation
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) delivers even better compression than WebP, with excellent quality at very low bitrates. Browser support is now good on Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
The main drawback is slower encoding times, making it less practical for real-time image processing.
JPEG XL: The Future?
JPEG XL promises the best of all worlds — lossless and lossy modes, HDR support, animations, and excellent compression. Chrome has re-enabled JPEG XL support in 2025. Watch this space.
